POLK COUNTY, Fla. (970 WFLA) – Polk deputies arrested nine people, seized 96 pounds of marijuana, 70 marijuana plants, equipment, cash, and vehicles, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office said Tuesday.

Deputies say the investigation began in May 2014.

PCSO says detectives found out 41-year-old Nelson Hernandez of LakeWales traveled to south Florida with a large amount of marijuana. Sheriff’s officials say surveillance followed Hernandez to an address in the Lake Worth area where the local authorities made contact at the residence, which led to the seizure of $17,000 in cash, located in Hernandez’ vehicle.

PCSO also says detectives learned that Hernandez was worried about law enforcement catching him with his grow operation so they say he began dismantling marijuana grow houses known to detectives. Surveillance saw Hernandez remove several large containers, boxes, and large duffle bags, and taking them into the home at 214 Limpkin Lane, Frostproof, Florida. Sheriff’s officials say detectives learned Hernandez had discussed with friends having to pay a person $10,000 to keep the items at his residence.

Deputies say six search warrants were authored and approved for locations in LakeWales and Frostproof, however, not all of the residences contained active indoor marijuana growing operations, but they did still have signs of prior cultivation to include taps diverting electricity before the meter.

The Department of Children and Families was notified and responded to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office Southeast District Substation and placed a 5-year-old boy and 14-year-old boy in their care who were children of some of the suspects.
