Deputies collect 1300 pounds of meds in ‘Operation Medicine Cabinet’

LARGO, Fla. (970 WFLA) – Sheriff’s deputies announced Saturday they collected 1,315.7 pounds of prescription medicine as part of ‘Operation Medicine Cabinet,’ which was held in conjunction with several area law enforcement agencies.

Deputies said there were seven locations in the county. Here’s the breakdown:

Pinellas county sheriff's office (administration building, north district, St. Pete Beach) 278 pounds Clearwater Police Department: 619 pounds

St. Pete Police Department: 160.2 pounds

Pinellas Park Police Department 134.5 pounds

Kenneth City Police Department 124 pounds

Deputies said the event is an opportunity for citizens to safely discard unused or expired prescription medications; and is a multi-agency effort aimed at addressing the problem of prescription drug abuse and keeping a clean environment.

Operation Medicine Cabinet events began in May 2009.
