TAMPA, Fla. (970 WFLA) - Flu season appears to have peaked around the state and in the Bay area, but the Hillsborough County Health Department's Steve Huard says new cases are still popping up, just not as many as a month ago.

“In the last five weeks we have reported mild flu activity to the CDC. We have investigated a couple of outbreaks in elementary schools,” Huard said.

The predominant flu strain this season is the H1N1 strain which has been hitting people in their 40s and 50s especially hard.

Flu season runs through March or April, and it’s not too late to get a flu shot.
