MIAMI (AP) - The Florida Department of Health has expressed concern about reports the federal government is sending unaccompanied immigrant minors from the southwest border to Miami - even as immigration attorneys say the practice has occurred for years.

Florida Secretary of Health John Armstrong told federal health officials Friday his office had received unconfirmed reports the federal government was transporting dozens of youth to Florida. In a letter his office shared with the media, Armstrong expressed concern that the U.S. Department of Health and Human services was so overwhelmed it was not providing basic medical screenings to the children.

Miami immigration attorney Cheryl Little said the federal government has for years housed these children in area shelters and that the numbers are up. But she said she hasn't seen any reports of children coming with serious untreated health risks.
