FL legislators propose changes to 7 districts

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - Seven of Florida's 27 current congressional districts are changing under a new map proposed by legislative leaders.

The Florida legislature kicked off a special session on Thursday. The session is being sparked by a judge's July ruling that found two districts were drawn illegally to benefit republicans. Circuit Judge Terry Lewis last week gave legislators until Aug. 15 to draw up a new map.

GOP legislators proposed a new map that changes a handful of districts in north and central Florida.

A district held by U.S. Rep. Corrine Brown would no longer include the city of Sanford but her district would include more of Putnam County. U.S. Rep. Dan Webster would lose part of Orange County, while the district of U.S. Rep. John Mica would also change.
