Hillsborough leaders to examine new transportation plan

TAMPA, Fla. (970 WFLA) - There's a transit meeting Tuesday among Hillsborough County leaders.

They'll consider a proposal that County Administrator Mike Merrill said calls for a penny sales tax referendum to pay for road improvements, an expanded bus system, and light rail. He insists this is a better plan that one which was defeated by voters in 2010.

“One of the criticisms was too much focus on rail and this time we learned the lesson from that and we created a balanced program for the consideration of the community that has roads, and sidewalks, and trails, safety projects, as well as enhanced bus service,” Merrill said.

If local leaders ultimately approve the latest plan, it would go to the voters in 2016.

Doug Guetzloe of the group "ax the tax" said he's not for it.

“Roads work. People will not give up their cars and have never done so. And one of the biggest fallacies to rail is that it goes to point A and point B. It doesn’t take you from where you work to where you live or to where you want to play or where you want to visit,” Guetzloe said.
