WINTER HAVEN, Fla. (970 WFLA) – Winter haven Police say a man is facing a simple battery charge after they say he punched a woman in the face at a McDonald's drive thru.
Police say a customer at the drive thru pulled out her phone and captured it all on video.
On Saturday, March 29 at 11:20 p.m., police say 68-year-old Howard Carl Wilson was in one lane of the double drive thru at McDonald's located at 245 6th St., NW while Brittani Thomas was a passenger in a vehicle in the other lane.
Police say Thomas' vehicle pulled in front of Wilson's after ordering. Then, police say Wilson was heard by witnesses yelling profanities and racial slurs through his window towards the other vehicle. After a few moments, police say Wilson exited his van and approached the passenger side of the vehicle where the victim was sitting. Police say she opened the door and asked what his problem was. After two minutes, police say Thomas is seen in the video attempting to close the door multiple times, but Wilson held the door open prohibiting her from closing it while he continued yelling. Just as the other vehicles in line ahead began to move forward, police say Wilson reached in the vehicle and punched Thomas in the face. Wilson then went back to his van, got in and drove off, police said.
Winter Haven PD says officers eventually found him at his home where he admitted to being at McDonald's that evening, but said he was only at the passenger door of the vehicle for no more than 15 seconds. Police say he said he was angry because the other vehicle cut him off and he almost struck it.
However, after seeing the video, police say he realized the situation was much more than he recalled.
Police say Wilson told officers, "it was like a road rage incident." Police say Wilson was charged with simple battery (m1) and booked into the Polk County Jail where he has since bonded out.
