More cases reported from two mosquito-borne diseases

TALLAHASSEE, FLA. (970WFLA) – The Florida Department of Health is warning Floridians of the threat of two mosquito-borne diseases – dengue fever and chikungunya.

In its weekly report, the department announced 24 people in Florida had confirmed cases of dengue fever and 18 people had confirmed cases of chikungunya.

All of the infected people in Florida have traveled to the Carribbean or South America and could have become infected there, but scientists are worried mosquitoes in Florida have picked up the diseases by biting them, which could lead to an epidemic around the state.

Health officials are urging Florida residents to be proactive and reduce the potential threat by clearing your yard of areas where mosquitoes breed.
