TAMPA, Fla. (970 WFLA) – Powerful afternoon thunderstorms are to blame for damage around the Tampa Bay area Thursday.

In Tampa, police say the intersection of N. 30th St and Bougainvillea had to be closed due to the severe rain that north Tampa experienced.

There was also an electrical fire at a Tampa home off of Orgeon Avenue, according to Tampa Fire Rescue. No residents were injured but a firefighter suffered a minor injury in the process of fighting the fire and was transported to an area hospital for further observation and treatment. According to the Fire Marshal investigator's preliminary report, TFR said the fire started in one of the bedrooms under a computer desk and was caused by an electrical failure in a power strip that had several items plugged into it. According to the report, weather may have been a factor as witnesses reported lightning strikes nearby just prior to the fire. Damage to the home and its contents is estimated at $15,000, firefighters said.

In PascoCounty, authorities report a roof came off of a mobile home at Land O’ Lakes and School Road. No injuries reported. They also say a power pole was knocked down and a grass caught fire, which was likely caused by a lightning strike.

There was also additional storm damage reported on Rinaldi Road in San Antonio for trees down on private property - no structures were damaged, officials said.
