NEW PORT RICHEY, Fla. (970 WFLA) – Pasco deputies say a man is dead after they say he fired shots at them when they came to talk to him about an attempted arson case.

Deputies say it all started around 1 a.m. PCSO deputies attempted to make contact with 43-year-old Patrick Gerome Tillery, who they say was a suspect in an attempted arson that happened Wednesday night at Rock Bottom Auto Sales located at 11643 Florida 52 in Hudson

Deputies say Tillery tried to set the business and cars in the lot on fire and made threats against the owner.

Thirty minutes later when deputies reached Tillery at a home on the 7800 block of Yucca Drive in New Port Richey, authorities say Tillery immediately began firing shots at the deputies and they returned fire.

Deputies say Tillery died from his gunshot wounds.

Pasco Sheriff's Office deputies were not injured in the exchange.
