Faces more than 30 years
TAMPA, Fla. (970 WFLA) -- Former Middleton High School teacher Christina Butler who was charged with having sex with a 16-year-old student a year ago pleaded guilty this morning to all of the charges against her.
34-year-old Butler was offered no plea negotiations, and her sentencing was postponed until Dec. 10. Her charges included contributing to the delinquency of a minor and two counts of unlawful sexual activity with a minor. She is facing a total of 30 years in federal prison.
Butler and her public defenders, Charles Traina and Maria Pavlidis, said they would not comment until the sentencing. By pleading guilty without any negotiations, Butler is now, totally in the hands of the court.
According to testimony, Butler engaged in sexual activity with the student at least twice from August until October 2007. The boy, then 16, was one of her students and had borderline mental retardation. Butler invited him to her house several times without permission from his parents, according to the statements.
On Oct. 23, 2007, the student was pulled over for a traffic infraction while driving Butler's jeep. Police learned he did not have a license and that he had a sexual relationship with Butler. He was charged with driving without a license, and Butler admitted to the sexual activity, police said.
Duran said that the teen did not have full understanding of what was going on. In addition to the recorded confession, Duran said the state obtained DNA evidence from Butler's home linking her to the student. He speculated that Butler's lawyers would offer evidence that she has psychological problems.
