Duke Announces New Solar Plant in Far North Florida

ST. PETERSBURG (970 WFLA) -- Duke Energy announces that it's building another new solar power plant, on 580 acres in Fort White, Florida, between Jacksonville and Tallahassee in Columbia County.

According to a Duke news releasse. the 74.9-megawatt plant will consist of approximately 245,000 solar panels on the site, which will produce enough carbon-free energy to power over 20,000 average homes at peak production.

Meantime, Duke says construction has just begun on another solar plant in nearby Hamilton County, close to the Georgia line in Jasper.

Duke plans to ask the Public Service Commission for the equivalent of a half-percent rate increase for each new power plant.
