Car Hits Girl Skateboarding in Brandon

Brandon, Fla. (Newsradio WFLA) - A car hit a girl riding a skateboard early Saturday and she suffered critical injuries, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said. The 17-year-old, not identified by name in a news release the HCSO sent, rode the skateboard in the bike lane of Providence Lakes Blvd. near Gornto Lake Rd. when a red Volkswagen Passat struck her. The girl went to Tampa General Hospital with "life-threatening injuries," according to the news release. The driver of the car stayed at the scene. Deputies don't know whether it was the driver or the skateboarder who crossed into the other's lane. They "do not believe speed, alcohol or drugs were factor in the crash," the release said. "No charges have been filed against the driver at this time."
