Florida Senate Panel Says Keep Oil Drilling Moratorium in Gulf of Mexico

TALLAHASSEE (WFLA News) -- A state Senate committee in Tallahassee unanimously passes a resolution urging the federal government to keep an oil drilling moratorium in the eastern Gulf of Mexico.

State Senator Ed Hooper's (R-Clearwater) resolution says drilling could affect thousands of military jobs.

"It's important for our... bases and naval training centers (to have a place) because they do use live ammunition... occasionally, that would not go well with a derrick," Hooper said.

Dave Mica with the Florida Petroleum Council says the real national security issue is ensuring that we can reach the oil under the Gulf.

The Senate resolution has to pass one more committee before going to the floor. A similar bill is going through the House.
