TAMPA -- A teacher at Durant High School is accused of having a sexual relationship with a student.
Hillsborough Sheriff Chad Chronister says Jaime Hernandez Cabrera, now 25, started talking to a then-16-year-old girl on social media in late 2022. Their relationship continued until the following June. Two months later, in August, Hernandez Cabrera began working at the girl's school, Durant High. Their relationship resumed and the last reported incident occurred last month on school property during school hours.
Deputies uncovered the relationship when they investigated an unrelated case April 11th. Hernandez Cabrera turned himself in a week later. He faces four charges of Unlawful Sexual Activity with a Minor and Sexual Battery involving an authority figure over a student. Chronister says Hernandez Cabrera betrayed "those who trusted him" and the "entire community."
