Bolts' Winless Streak Extended To Five In Shootout Loss

In the second meeting between the Lightning and Coyotes, Tampa Bay looked to avenge their November loss in Phoenix, unfortunately, they extended their winless streak to five games with their second straight shootout loss.

Tyler Johnson notched his fourth shorthanded goal of the season to open scoring 11:26 into the contest after taking a pass from fellow rookie Ondrej Palat and deking Phoenix defenseman Keith Yandle before putting the puck between Mike Smith's legs and into the net. Johnson's shorthanded tally is tied with Boston's Brad Marchand for tops in the NHL in the category.

1:01 into the middle frame, the Coyotes tied it up after Brandon McMillan took advantage of Ben Bishop being tied up in front of the net, and sent one past the Bolts' goalies' stretched out legs.

With :53 left to go in the second, Ryan Callahan created a loose puck by jamming his stick in the crease and knocking it to Palat, who picked up his second multi-point game in as many tries by wristing it home to give the Lightning a 2-1 lead to end the period.

Just over two minutes into the final period of regulation, Martin Erat's unassisted equalizer put the Coyotes back at even with the Lightning with two goals a piece.

Five and a half minutes later, Mikkel Boedker gave Phoenix their first lead of the night and as time had ticked under the 1:00 mark, the energy in the stands had left the Forum, but not on the ice as Palat notched his second goal of the night with 37.2 to go to tie the game back up.

After five scoreless minutes of overtime hockey, the Lightning headed to a shootout for the second straight contest.

And, in the second straight contest, Tampa Bay failed to convert a shot, and fell for the fifth consecutive game as Radim Vrbata sent the puck past Bishop for the goal while the Lightning missed all three shots.
