Shortly after the NHL resumed following its league-mandated break for the Sochi Winter Games, reports out of New York surfaced that Lightning captain, Martin St. Louis was so upset over not being named to the original Team Canada roster by then-Executive Director Steve Yzerman, who is also and Vice President and General Manager of the Bolts, that St. Louis demanded a trade to the Rangers.
When asked about the rumors last week, the 14-year veteran admitted that he and Yzerman had spoken about his future, but refused to delve any deeper than that.
The comments didn't do anything to quell the rumors, however, and the St. Louis-to-New York reports continued.
With the trade deadline looming, editor of Yahoo! Sports popular hockey blog Puck Daddy Sean Leahy joined the Ron and Ian Show Tuesday morning to share his thoughts on the situation in Tampa Bay.
"Basically since the rumors first came out, the rumors have died a little bit," Leahy said. "Marty's obviously playing well and I'm sure Steve Yzerman doesn't want to trade one of his two best players."
Leahy doesn't believe the Lightning have to trade St. Louis; the return of Steven Stamkos may be the only addition to the lineup Tampa Bay needs.
"I think the biggest need for them right now is - look, I don't think Yzerman needs to make many moves tomorrow, if any," Leahy said. "You're getting Steven Stamkos back sometime this week, hopefully, and that's obviously the biggest acquisition he's going to make this week."
Leahy offered that a top four defenseman could be on the Lightning's radar, but also added that Tampa Bay may not be willing to trade the young talent that has performed well so far this season for the Bolts.
"If you're Yzerman, you don't have much to give up," Leahy said. "You've got a lot of good, young players that you don't really want to sacrifice for a potential rental for this year.
"You've got Alex Killorn, Tyler Johnson, Ondrej Palat - those are guys you want to hang on to and develop because they're having great seasons. And prices around the trade deadline tend to be high for certain G.M.s so I don't know if I see Steve (Yzerman) doing a lot by tomorrow before 3:00 pm."
Leahy also shares his thoughts on the relationship between the Lightning captain and general manager as well as talk about the role Stamkos plays in the alleged rift within the organization.
