Lightning Win In Shootout And Grab Home Ice

By: Emmett Stevenson

The Tampa Bay Lightning wrapped up the regular season Sunday afternoon at The Verizon Center in Washington against the Capitals. The Bolts entered the game needing a victory to secure home ice advantage for their upcoming first round matchup against the Montreal Canadiens.

The first period started well for the Lightning as they controlled the pace and momentum for most of the first 20 minutes out shooting the Capitals 11-3 but the game was scoreless after one period.

The second period was much like the first as Tampa Bay out shot Washington, but Caps goaltender Braden Holtby denied the Lightning's many scoring chances. It was still scoreless after two periods.

After a scoreless third period, the Bolts headed to overtime. After the five minute extra period, it went to a shootout. Matt Carle scored the shootout game winner giving the Lightning the 1-0 victory and home ice advantage for the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Game 1 against the Montreal Canadiens will be Wednesday at 7pm at the Tampa Bay Times Forum.
