Noles Hang On For 37-31 Win Over Oklahoma State

Florida State’s 2014 campaign got off to a rough start in Dallas as they fought to the very end for a 37-31 victory over unranked Oklahoma State.  Defending Heisman Trophy winner Jameis Winston led his team to the victory at AT&T Stadium with 370 yards on 25 completions with a passing and rushing touchdown.

The Noles got out to a 17-0 lead early in the second quarter on Mario Pender’s 11 yard touchdown run.  Oklahoma State would not go away early as the Cowboys scored 10 points to close out the first half pulling within a single score.

The two teams traded scores in the second half but Oklahoma State couldn’t get within three points of the Noles leads for the entire game.  Cowboys quarterback J.W. Walsh passed for 203 yards with a passing touchdown and two rushing touchdowns.  Walsh was a one man machine for the Cowboys as he led the team in rushing as well with 51 yards in 11 carries including 24 yard touchdown run pulling Oklahoma State within three points early in the fourth quarter.

As well as Walsh played throughout the game, a costly mistake late in the final quarter proved deadly for the Cowboys.  With under five minutes to play and Oklahoma State within six points, Walsh fumbled the ball on a 2nd and 5 play stopping all the momentum Oklahoma State had at the time.  Two plays later Winston found Rashad Greene on a 50 yard catch and run for a Seminoles’ touchdown.

Oklahoma State scored a touchdown on their next drive but FSU was able to run out the clock preventing what would have been one of the biggest opening day upsets in college football history.

The Seminoles will open their home slate at Doak Campbell Stadium next Saturday as they welcome the Citadel Bulldogs to Tallahassee.  Kickoff is set for 7:30pm.
