The Tampa Bay Buccaneers officially introduced former Arizona Cardinals Vice President of Player Personnel Jason Licht (‘light’) as the fifth General Manager in team history on Thursday afternoon. Licht was named as the Arizona Cardinals’ vice president of player personnel in 2013 after being promoted from director of player personnel after stints with the Patriots, Eagles, and Dolphins.
Licht said in his opening remarks the besides being a part of the Super Bowl winning New England Patriots staff in 2001, this was the most memorable moment of his career. Licht also thanked new Buccaneers head coach Lovie Smith for recommending him for the job to the Glazer family after failing to land the open GM position in Chicago during Smith’s final year with the Bears.
“We share the same beliefs” said Licht. “Our main goal and vision, along with the Glazer Family, was to win a championship. Not just win a championship, but sustain that championship success year in and year out. And there’s no doubt in my mind that we’re going to reach that goal.”
As for the future of the Buccaneers current roster Licht said that the team is in a good place for a quick turnaround very similar to how the Arizona Cardinals did this past season. The 42 year former linebacker from Nebraska also spoke that he wants competition at the every position including quarterback.
“He’s (Mike Glennon) a deceptive athlete and an accurate passer said Licht. “I think he’s got a bright future. We’re going to put competition in every place and at every level on this football team, but we see a bright future for Mike Glennon.”
As for the upcoming NFL draft in May, Licht says the franchise will know exactly who they will be targeting and have to make the right choice for the Buccaneers in order to win now.
